You can take a break: what a 2-week pause did to handstand training
We took beginners learning a handstand and pulled two full weeks of skill practice out of their 12-week plan. They lost nothing, and their form may even have benefited. What our study says about breaks, and why skill and strength fade at different speeds.

Anyone who has tried to learn a physical skill knows the anxiety of a break. You finally have some momentum with the guitar, the golf swing, the handstand, and then a work trip or a flu takes two weeks out of your calendar. The fear is that the skill quietly drains away while you are gone and you return to square one.
My co-authors and I got to test that fear directly. The study, led by Henri Hänninen at the University of Jyväskylä, took adults learning to hold a freestanding handstand and deliberately removed two full weeks of handstand practice from the middle of their training plan. It is published in the Science of Gymnastics Journal, and the title gives away the result: you can take a break.
What we actually did
We ran 41 hobbyists through a 12-week online handstand course. All of them could kick up into a handstand against a wall but none could hold a free one for a minute, which conveniently ruled out gymnasts and circus professionals. Everyone trained twice a week with 45-minute follow-along videos, filmed themselves, and sent the videos in. The study ran during COVID restrictions, so the whole thing happened in people's living rooms.
The key move was in how the groups differed. One group practiced handstands for all 12 weeks. The other two had two weeks of handstand practice swapped out entirely, one group in weeks 6 and 7, the other in weeks 8 and 9. During those weeks they did no handstand work at all.
They did not rest, though, and this is the detail the whole study turns on. During their break from skill practice they trained upper-body strength instead: push-up variations, wrist work, hollow-body holds. The reasoning comes from what we know about how different adaptations fade. Motor skills are remarkably durable; once genuinely learned, they can survive long stretches without practice. Strength is not. It starts slipping within weeks of stopping. So if a physically demanding skill rests on strength, the smart bet is that you can pause the skill and keep the strength, but not the other way around.
What happened
Everyone improved, and not by a little. Across all groups the average freestanding hold went from about 2 seconds to about 6.5 seconds, and scores on a simple 0-to-3 form scale roughly doubled. Learning a handstand in 12 weeks of home training is entirely realistic, which is a finding I am happy to put my name on all by itself.
The groups that lost two weeks of practice ended up no worse than the group that trained handstands the whole time. By the final test there were no meaningful differences between the groups at all. Form actually tells a slightly cheekier story: the improvement in handstand form was statistically significant in both break groups, but fell just short of it in the handstand-only group. Two weeks of push-ups may have done more for people's handstand line than two more weeks of handstands. We would want more data before leaning hard on that, but the direction is striking.
One nuance is worth keeping. Midway through, the group whose break came later, after seven weeks of practice rather than five, was ahead of the group whose break came earlier. That gap had closed by the end. For a beginner, a couple of extra weeks of practice before a pause seems to matter in the short run and wash out in the long run. If you are training toward a date, keep the specific practice close to it. If you are training for the long haul, it makes little difference.
We also found that participants who started stronger, measured by max push-ups, gained more balance time. My reading is that strength buys you room for error upside down: bigger corrective forces, so a wobble stays a wobble instead of becoming a fall.
The honest caveats
This was a remote study with self-filmed tests and self-reported adherence, the participants were beginners, and the break was exactly two weeks, not a month or a season. We measured outcomes, not mechanisms, so the neural story is informed inference rather than direct observation. All of that limits how far the conclusions stretch, and the paper says so plainly.
What I take from it
The practical lesson fits in a sentence: a planned break from practicing a skill is not lost time, as long as you keep training the things that fade fast, which for most physical skills means strength.
I find the psychological lesson at least as useful. The panic of a missed week comes from a mental model where skill drains at a constant rate. It does not. If you have practiced well, the skill is more durable than it feels, and a fortnight doing something else, deliberately chosen, can be part of the plan rather than a failure of it.
